Standard Notation for SCMR

Note from Gary:

Randy and I spent a lot of time making up the format we use to describe the elements of an SCMR that is written in a pattern. We would be honored if that format were used when others start designing with SCMR's.

We both give our permission to any designer to use the same written format for describing the SCMR in the instructions of a pattern.

Perhaps this way we can do our part in making some aspects of tatting a standard.

Keep up the good works,

The Self-Closing Mock Ring (SCMR) is a section that can consist of many elements. To help you follow the written instructions, all elements of the SCMR are within brackets []. Remember, anytime you see the abbreviation SCMR you start by putting a thread loop in the core thread then continue with the instructions within the brackets. The final instruction is always to close (CL), which means pass the core thread through the thread loop and pull the SCMR closed as you would a traditional ring.

Example:

SCMR[C 4-4. SS. R 4-4-4-4. SS. C 4. SS. R 4+4-4-4 (to last p of previous R). SS. C4-4.] CL.

Start with a thread loop in the core thread, then chain 4 double stitches (ds), picot, 4 ds. Switch shuttles.
Make a ring of 4 ds, picot, 4 ds, picot, 4 ds, picot, 4 ds. Close ring. Switch shuttles.
Chain 4 ds. Switch shuttles.
Make a ring of 4 ds, join to the last picot of the previous ring, 4 ds, picot, 4 ds, picot, 4 ds. Close ring. Switch shuttles.
Chain 4 ds, picot, 4 ds. Pass the core thread through the thread loop and close as if it were a ring.
